Spring into the arts this weekend in Pottstown!

I’m sorry I’ve been AWOL for so long – teaching and coaching take up just about all of my waking/thinking hours these days – but I have not forgotten you, Pottstown and its champions, and will continue to promote your fun, fascinating, and hard-won triumphs whenever possible! The following info comes from press releases from these organizations.

Whether you want to browse recycled and upcycled art at ArtFusion 19464, or take in a new, classic American drama – August: Osage County – at Steel River Playhouse, there’s plenty to keep your right brain busy this weekend.

First, there will be an opening reception at ArtFusion from 6-8 pm TONIGHT, Friday, March 21st, as they open their show, ReSourced, which helps prove true the old adage that “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Local artists have created work from recycled, upcycled and salvaged items. Visitors to ArtFusion will be delighted by the wide range of pieces on display, from functional clothing to gorgeous free-standing sculptures.

Each visitor will also have a chance to contribute to a fun public art project. Throughout the show, which runs from March 21 through May 3, visitors will have a chance to add to a large scale, recycled weaving project. The weaving will be created from plastic bags, paper, VCR tapes, and more. The piece can be seen as it grows in the front window of the ArtFusion gallery.

Participating artists are: Alita Abruzzzese, Lisbeth Bucci, Robyn Burckhardt, Tom Carroll, Arline Christ, Maggie Creshkoff, James M. Enders, Juanita A. Gaspari, Robert Hakun, Heidi Hammel, Joe Hoover, Millie Lea, Dora Siemel, Carla Schaeffer, Teresa Shields, Donna Steck-McMahon, and Julie Tonnessen.

There will be an opening reception for ReSourced on Friday, March 21 from 6-8pm. All receptions are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. A $100 Best in Show prize, sponsored by the NARI-BIE Green Team, will be presented at 6:30pm.

In conjunction with this show, ArtFusion is offering free field trips to local schools. Over 550 children have currently signed up for a fun, interactive experience. Students will learn about and discuss recycling, why it is important to the future of our planet, and how artists create with objects other people throw away. Each student will also create their own unique piece of recycled art. This show will help teach local children the importance of caring for our planet and will inspire them to look at the world–and how people create art–in a whole new way.

ArtFusion 19464 is a 501(c)3 non-profit community art center located at 254 E. High St. in downtown Pottstown. The school offers day, evening and weekend classes to all ages. The goal of these classes is to help students develop their creative skills through self-expression and independence. ArtFusion’s gallery hosts rotating shows featuring local artists. The gallery also sells handcrafted, one-of-a-kind gift items.  The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-3pm. The gallery is closed Sunday and Monday.

Now, maybe you want to drop in at ArtFusion right at 6 and then cross the street to Steel River for the 7 pm showing of August: Osage County IT IS IN ITS FINAL WEEKEND!! (Friday and Saturday at 7 pm; Sunday at 3 pm)

It has gotten some great reviews (see The Mercury’s review here.) This play swept the 2008 awards season, winning the Pulitzer plus all the “Best Play” awards –  the Tonys (5 in all), Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and New York Drama Critic’s Circle awards. It’s about wild and wacky family dynamics, which make it perfect for a grown-up night out, book clubs, service organizations – you get the idea (not for young kids).

Please note: It’s a long play so it’s got an early curtain for the evening performances (7 pm), but it’s fast-paced and engrossing. There are two intermissions so there’s plenty of time to kick back with a glass of wine or beer – especially appropriate for this play! And you’re welcome to bring your refreshments into the audience seating area.

“When We Were Soldiers” opens tomorrow at ArtFusion 19464

I am so grateful and proud to have been part of “When We Were Soldiers,” an exhibit showcasing the stories, memories, and artifacts of local Vietnam veterans. It opens tomorrow at ArtFusion 19464, at 254 E. High Street, in Pottstown. See the Mercury’s awesome coverage here.

An opening reception and welcome home ceremony will run from 5-8 pm, beginning at the Borough parking lot at High and Charlotte Streets. There will be a motorcycle cavalcade and speakers to give the “welcome home” that these veterans never received. I, along with writer Parker Blaney, interviewed the vets this past summer and worked with them to draft narratives of their experiences, from getting drafted to their service, and their experiences coming home, re-integrating into civilian life, and the long-term effects of war. These men were brave once again to have this dialogue and agree to share it with the general public.

Cathy Paretti of ArtFusion has put their stories on homemade paper and combined them with photos and all kinds of articles that these veterans and others brought back with them. It will be a truly educational exhibit, appropriate for middle school students and older, about this time in our country’s history. Please plan to visit sometime between Sept. 20 – Nov. 9.

POW/MIA flags to be hung in downtown Pottstown

The press release below was received from ArtFusion 19464. Positively Pottstown is proud to help sponsor the purchase of the POW/MIA flags that will soon be flying downtown. A few weeks ago I, along with writer and counselor, Parker Blaney, interviewed a dozen local veterans, who are participating in a storytelling project for an educational exhibit – When We Were Soldiers – about the Vietnam War. We are in the midst of writing up those narratives and getting further feedback from the veterans to make sure we get it right. The exhibit will open on September 20th with a one-of-a-kind “Welcome Home” for area Vietnam veterans. Please mark your calendars for September 20th at 5 pm at ArtFusion 19464, 254 E. High Street in Pottstown. ~ Sue Repko

Shown below at presentation of flags at Borough Hall: Frank Strunk, President of Pottstown Keystone Chapter 565 of Vietnam Veterans of America; Billy Worrell, of American Legion Post 244; and Mark Flanders, Pottstown Borough Manager.

In preparation for ArtFusion 19464’s fall educational exhibit When We Were Soldiers, downtown Pottstown will soon be flying POW/MIA flags. The flags will be hung the week of July 4th and be on display through Veterans Day.

This display was made possible through the support of the greater Pottstown community and beyond. Representative Mark Painter’s office donated 2 flags. Generous donations were also made by the following individuals and organizations: David Garner, Esq., Pottstown Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Positively Pottstown, Federation of Concerned Organizations, POW/MIA Forget Me Nots, American Legion Post 244 and Jack and Cathy Paretti, Theresa Orlosky, Sharon Shulby. Billy Worrell, member of American Legion Post 244 and a Vietnam Veteran, was very instrumental in getting the donations and arranging the purchase of the flags.

When We Were Soldiers will focus on the personal recollections of veterans of the Vietnam War. The show will open September 20 with a Welcome Home reception and run through Veterans Day. As part of the reception, local motorcycle clubs will be participating in a welcome home ride. The reception will run from 5-8pm. Light refreshments will be served. While this reception is free, ArtFusion will be collecting donations for a free arts program for veterans as well as to fund maintenance for the Pottstown Vietnam Memorial.

The Pottstown Keystone Chapter 565 of Vietnam Veterans meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7PM at the VFW located on High Street in Pottstown. Anyone is invited to attend a meeting.

New, Free Art Program for Kids at ArtFusion 19464!

Check out this innovative, FREE program and sign up by March 31st!!

Local young artists will soon get a chance to expand their drawing skills while learning about a new language. Drawing with Hebrew Letters, sponsored by Sager and Sager and The Jewish Women’s League of Congregation Mercy and Truth, will introduce students to drawing using a creative language of letters and shapes. The graphic quality of the Hebrew alphabet is the perfect inspiration for teaching language through art. Students will create with ink, paper and color, learning to express with their hands what their imaginations see.

This free program is open to artists of all faiths. No prior drawing experience or knowledge of the language is required, just a desire to learn and create. Applications can be picked up at ArtFusion’s 254 E. High St. location or downloaded from their website at artfusion19464.org. Applications are due by March 31.

Soup Bowl Fundraiser Returns to ArtFusion for a Second Year

ArtFusion will be holding a great beat-the-winter-chill fundraiser on Saturday, January 26 from 11am-1pm at their High St. location. The Soup Bowl fundraiser debuted last year and is back due to poplar demand. Lunch includes all you can eat soup, bread, beverages and homemade desserts. Guests can choose their favorite soup—or sample them all. In response to requests from last year’s event, this year soup enthusiasts can also purchase a recipe book so they can make their favorite soups at home.

As a “thank you,” supporters will take home a handcrafted ceramic bowl created by local volunteers of all ages. Each bowl was created though the combined creativity of two different volunteers. One created the ceramic bowl and one decorated it with a one-of-a-kind glaze design.

Tickets are only $15 and all proceeds benefit the local non-profit community art center. Tickets can be purchased online at artfusion19464.org, or at their 254 E. High St. location during regular business hours. There are a limited number of tickets available for this event. ArtFusion request that those interested in attending purchase their tickets in advance.

January 26 will also mark the beginning of an eyeglass collection campaign for the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 565 and the Second Brigade MC Chapter G – PA. There is a great need for magnifiers/cheater eyeglasses in all strengths. Glasses do not need to be new but ArtFusion does ask that they be in good shape (not scratched or broken). The donated glasses will be given directly to veterans. After the fundraiser, eyeglasses can be dropped off at ArtFusion during normal business hours through February 28.
